How to Prepare Your Macon Home for Drywall Installation Day

The smoother the prep, the faster the install — and the better the finished result. Most Macon homeowners hire us to handle drywall installation in a room or two while continuing to live in the rest of the house. A little planning ahead of time turns a stressful project into a routine one. Here's our recommended prep checklist for the day before our crew arrives.
Move or Cover Furniture
Clear the work room of anything that can be moved — furniture, rugs, lamps, decor. For pieces too heavy or too fragile to move (pianos, antiques, large bookcases), move them as far as possible from the work zone and we'll cover them with plastic sheeting. The more empty the room, the faster and cleaner the work goes.
Protect Adjacent Floors
We bring floor protection for the work room. For the path between our trucks and the work area — entryway, hallway, stairs — extra runners or cardboard help keep dust and tracked-in debris off your floors. If you have hardwood or LVP, this is especially worth a few minutes of prep.
Take Down Pictures and Mirrors
Pictures and mirrors on adjacent walls vibrate when we're hanging board and screwing it off in the next room. We've never broken one, but we'd rather not test fate. Take them down for the duration of the project and store them safely.
Plan Around Kids and Pets
Drywall dust is fine and gets everywhere despite containment. Sand-day is the messiest — consider taking kids out for the day or to a relative's house. Pets should be kept out of the work area entirely; dust and dogs both follow the same instincts to investigate new smells, and it never ends well.
Clear Access Paths
We need to move 4×8 or 4×12 sheets of drywall from our truck to the work room. Clear the path: move cars out of the driveway near the entrance, make sure interior doors swing fully open, and tell us about any tight turns or stairs ahead of time so we can plan.
HVAC Considerations
Drywall dust will destroy a furnace filter and recirculate through the house if you leave the HVAC running normally during sanding day. Either turn the system off for the day or upgrade to a high-MERV filter and seal the return grille with painter's plastic. We can help with the latter if needed.
Plan for Noise
Drywall hang day involves screw guns, panel lifts, and occasional shouted measurements. Mud days are quieter but still involve sanding. If you work from home, plan to take calls in a far part of the house or out of the home on hang day and sand day.
Communicate Existing Conditions
Walk us through any pre-existing damage in the work room or adjacent areas — cracks in plaster, settled door frames, loose flooring. We document our before-state so there's no confusion later about what was already there. Pictures on your phone are a great way to capture this in 5 minutes.
Final Walk-Through Schedule
At the end of the project we'll do a punch-list walk-through together — checking lighting from multiple angles, inspecting corners, and noting anything that needs touch-up. Plan to be home for that. Macon Drywall Contractors handles every project this way; call (478) 555-0100 for a free estimate and we'll walk you through prep in detail.
