How Long Does Drywall Installation Take? Realistic Macon Timelines

'How long will the drywall take?' is the second question every Macon homeowner asks, right after price. The answer depends on size, finish level, weather, and whether your project is competing with other trades for the schedule. Here are realistic timelines from our crew, broken down by project size.

Single Bedroom (10×12 to 12×14)

A typical Macon bedroom takes 3–4 days from start to finish. Day 1: hang the board and apply tape coat. Day 2: second mud coat. Day 3: third mud coat and sand. Day 4: texture, primer-ready prep, and final cleanup. We can compress to 2–3 days by using quick-set mud, but the slower schedule produces a flatter finish.

Bathroom (5×8 to 8×10)

A bathroom takes 2–3 days for drywall scope only. Smaller surface area moves faster, but cuts around tubs, plumbing, and vanities slow the hang. If cement backer board is required for tile, add a half day for that. Tile installation is a separate trade and adds 2–4 more days.

Kitchen Drywall (Post-Remodel)

Kitchen drywall after a remodel takes 3–5 days depending on whether you're hanging the entire space or patching after cabinet removal. The complexity is in the cuts around windows, soffits, range hoods, and the inevitable last-minute changes from the cabinet installer. We coordinate closely with the cabinet trade.

Living Room or Family Room

A 15×20 living room with 9' ceilings typically takes 4–5 days. The extra time comes from longer wall runs (more taping linear feet), higher ceiling work (often requires staging), and the visual prominence of the finished surface (we often go to Level 5 or extra-careful Level 4 finish).

Finished Basement (1,000–1,200 sq ft)

A typical Macon basement finish takes 1–2 weeks for drywall scope only: 2–3 days hang, 4–5 days mud coats with overnight dry between, 1–2 days sand and texture, 1 day clean up and walk-through. Fire-rated assemblies on the ceiling and moisture-resistant board on perimeter walls add complexity but not much extra time.

Full Home (2,000–2,500 sq ft New Construction)

New construction drywall on a typical Macon home takes 2–3 weeks. We start hanging once the rough-in inspections are complete and the home is dried in. Hang takes 4–6 days, mud coats take 5–7 days, sanding 1–2 days, texture and primer-ready prep 1–2 days. Painters can usually start the day after we finish.

Weather Effects on Schedule

Mud dry time depends on temperature and humidity. In Macon's humid summers, joint compound can take 2–3 days to dry between coats instead of overnight, stretching schedules. Cold weather slows dry time too. We schedule fans and dehumidifiers as needed, but extreme weather can add a few days to any project.

Coordinating with Other Trades

Drywall is the trade other trades wait on. Painters need primer-ready walls. Flooring installers need cleaned-up rooms. Trim carpenters need flat walls to scribe to. We communicate proactively with the GC or homeowner about exact completion dates so other trades can start without false starts.

Why We Don't Rush

A drywall job that's pushed too fast almost always shows it — tape ridges, sand-through spots, texture inconsistencies, and primer flashing. We'd rather take an extra day than deliver a wall the owner will be unhappy with for the next decade. For a realistic Macon drywall timeline, call (478) 555-0100.
